ChatGPT introduces trial group chat feature in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled a group chat function for ChatGPT. This new option, currently in trial across select areas such as Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, enables users to work together directly inside the app.

This group chat capability is accessible to Free, Plus, and Team members on both web and mobile devices. OpenAI notes that this trial aims to observe how users interact in group settings within ChatGPT.

This update follows earlier news that OpenAI had been experimenting with a tool similar to direct messaging.

OpenAI refers to this test as an initial move toward building a more “collective experience” within the app. Early adopters will be asked to share their thoughts, which OpenAI says will influence how the feature grows and becomes available in additional regions and plans.

OpenAI assures that private conversations and individual ChatGPT memories remain fully confidential. Group chats require invitations, and participants can exit whenever they wish. Most members have the ability to remove others, but only the group creator can choose to leave. For users under 18, there are content filters, extra protections, and parental controls in place.

Starting a group chat is straightforward: tap the people icon and add others, either directly or by sending a link. Each group can have between 1 and 20 members. Adding someone to an ongoing chat creates a new group, so the original discussion stays the same. Every group features a brief profile, and all conversations are neatly organized in a labeled sidebar for convenience.

Group conversations function like standard ChatGPT chats, but with several users participating. GPT‑5.1 Auto manages replies and offers tools like search, image creation, file sharing, and voice input. In group chats, ChatGPT’s usage limits—which cap the number of AI replies per hour—only apply when ChatGPT answers. Messages exchanged between people do not count toward these limits.

ChatGPT has picked up new social abilities for group chats, recognizing when to contribute and when to stay silent. You can mention “ChatGPT” to prompt a reply. It can also use emojis to react and generate custom images for the chat using profile pictures.

This group chat addition marks another step in OpenAI’s evolution from a basic AI assistant to a platform with social features. In late September, the company rolled out Sora 2, a dedicated social app featuring a TikTok-like feed for sharing AI-made videos, algorithm-driven recommendations based on user behavior and location, parental controls, and private messaging options.
