Runway Unveils Its First World Model, GWM-1

Runway, a leader in AI-driven image and video generation, has entered the competitive field of world models with the introduction of GWM-1. This new model utilizes frame-by-frame prediction to simulate environments, incorporating an understanding of physical laws and real-world dynamics as they unfold over time.

What Is a World Model?

World models are advanced AI systems designed to internally simulate how the world operates. This capability allows them to reason, plan, and make decisions without requiring exposure to every possible real-world scenario during training.

GWM-1: A Step Beyond the Competition

Earlier this month, Runway launched its Gen 4.5 video model, which outperformed both Google and OpenAI on the Video Arena leaderboard. Now, the company claims that GWM-1 offers broader generalization than Google’s Genie-3 and other rivals. Runway envisions GWM-1 as a versatile tool for training agents in fields such as robotics and life sciences.

“To develop a world model, we first needed to perfect our video modeling capabilities. We believe that teaching models to predict pixels directly is the most effective route to building general-purpose simulations. With enough scale and the right data, it’s possible to create a model that truly grasps how the world functions,” explained CTO Anastasis Germanidis during a livestream event.

Runway has introduced several specialized versions of its new world model: GWM-Worlds, GWM-Robotics, and GWM-Avatars.

Currently, Worlds, Robotics, and Avatars are separate models, but Runway plans to eventually integrate them into a unified system.

Gen 4.5 Model Receives Major Update

Alongside the new world model, Runway is enhancing its Gen 4.5 model, which debuted earlier this month. The latest update introduces native audio support and the ability to generate long-form, multi-shot videos. Users can now create one-minute videos featuring consistent characters, synchronized dialogue, background sound, and complex scenes from multiple perspectives. The platform also enables editing of existing audio, adding new dialogue, and modifying multi-shot videos of any length.

This update brings Runway’s capabilities closer to those of Kling’s comprehensive video suite, which also launched recently, especially in terms of integrated audio and multi-shot storytelling. These advancements indicate that video generation tools are moving from experimental prototypes to robust, production-ready solutions. The improved Gen 4.5 model is now accessible to all users with paid plans.

Looking Ahead: SDK and Industry Partnerships

Runway has announced that GWM-Robotics will be available via a software development kit (SDK). The company is actively collaborating with robotics firms and enterprises interested in leveraging both GWM-Robotics and GWM-Avatars for their projects.
