Ripple and the SEC have reached an agreement to suspend a $125 million judgment, hinting at a possible appeal
The legal team of Ripple Labs has requested a suspension of the payment for the $125 million fine ruled on August 7, 2023. The SEC has agreed to postpone the payment until after September 6. Ripple proposed depositing 111% (approximately $139 million) of the judgment amount into a bank account until the end of the appeal period or when an appeal decision is made. This move may indicate that SEC will appeal. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse called this ruling a "victory", and stated that they would "respect" this fine. The case was presided over by Judge Analisa Torres, if appealed, it means that disputes between Ripple and SEC are not yet resolved. The SEC had accused Ripple of using XRP as unregistered securities for fundraising; however, previously judge ruled that sales of XRP on exchanges do not constitute securities. Currently, XRP's price is at $0.56 with approximately a 0.15% increase in value over past thirty days.
