U.S. Prosecutors Want 5 Years in Prison for Ilya Lichtenstein, Hacker in Bitfinex Case

On October 17, U.S. prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence for Ilya Lichtenstein, who pleaded guilty to stealing 120,000 bitcoins from cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex in 2016, according to Cointelegraph.

In an Oct. 15 filing, prosecutors petitioned the federal court in Washington, D.C., asking that Lichtenstein's sentence be less than the 20 years he could face for pleading guilty to money-laundering conspiracy.

They argued that the lighter sentence was warranted because Lichtenstein had no prior criminal record and had provided “significant assistance” that benefited “many investigations.
