Citi: The U.S. is more likely to build a strategic crypto reserve, but more details are needed
Citibank (C) stated in a research report on Monday that the possibility of the United States establishing a strategic reserve of cryptocurrencies seems greater after President Trump announced this news over the weekend. Citibank pointed out that the US government currently holds about $19 billion in cryptocurrencies, mainly Bitcoin, while the amount of gold held is $750 billion. The report stated that the vast majority of assets seized by the government are Bitcoin, which means that the accumulation of other digital assets is likely to be funded by purchases on the open market. However, the bank stated that the "selection criteria are currently unclear," and that announcing such investments in advance could disadvantage investors in terms of price, adding that a similar situation occurred with the British government in the late 1990s regarding gold. The bank stated that further clarification on the selection criteria for which tokens to include in the reserves will provide more support.
