Tunisia Tackles Education Fraud With Blockchain Technology

The Tunisian government has reportedly adopted a blockchain-based diploma verification system at its higher education institutions. The system is intended to help education officials weed out fake educational documents that some Tunisians have used to secure employment.

According to a report, Tunisia began implementing the Unified Arab System for Diploma Authenticity Verification (UASDAV) on Feb. 28. The UASDAV reportedly stores each diploma “as a unique, secure, and tamper-proof block.” This ensures such educational documents cannot be forged or modified.

A 2023 probe by the Tunisian Association for the Fight Against Corruption found that between 2011 and 2023, an estimated 121,000 to 200,000 government employees used fake documents to secure employment. Local observers argue that this widespread fraud has significant implications for the integrity and efficiency of the Tunisian public sector.

Tunisia’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has launched a project to digitize diplomas, aiming to ensure their integrity and develop digital skills. The project seeks to modernize the education sector, following a cooperation agreement with the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO).

By using blockchain to help maintain the integrity of its education system, Tunisia joins two other African countries, namely Ethiopia and Mauritius, in harnessing the technology. While Ethiopia seeks to use blockchain for student and teacher credentials, Mauritius uses it to verify government-issued credentials. In Nigeria, some universities are experimenting with blockchain-recorded diplomas to ensure authenticity and simplify verification.

These initiatives reflect a growing recognition of blockchain’s potential to create secure and transparent systems for credential verification.

Besides combating fraud, Tunisia’s digitized diploma initiative aims to enhance academic and professional mobility by ensuring instant recognition of diplomas globally, while also boosting the credibility and competitiveness of Tunisian universities worldwide.
