Fed Governor Sues Trump Over 'Illegal' Attempt to Fire Her

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook filed a lawsuit against current U.S. President Donald Trump after his attempted impeachment. The lawsuit challenges the legality of the decision and requests that it be deemed "illegal and void," according to documents filed in federal court in Washington, D.C.
On Friday, Judge Jia Cobb held an emergency hearing that lasted two hours but ended without an immediate decision. The focus of the discussion was Cook's request for a temporary restraining order to prevent his removal from the Federal Reserve.
Cook was accused by the president of mortgage fraud, stemming from the purchase of a house and an apartment in 2021. However, in her petition, she did not directly address the allegations, focusing instead on defending her right to remain an active member of the Fed. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated:
She shouldn't be taken out of the office, she shouldn't be disconnected from her electronic devices... She should do everything she did a week before all this started, because that's the status quo.
Analysts raised suspicions that the move could be linked to Trump's dissatisfaction with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell following his decision to keep interest rates unchanged. However, Justice Department attorney Yaakov Roth denied any connection between the two cases and maintained that there were "valid reasons" to justify the president's decision.
White House spokesman Kush Desai reinforced this position, stating that the measure was aimed at "enhancing the Federal Reserve Board's accountability and credibility to both the markets and the American people." He added:
“The President determined there were grounds to remove a governor who was accused of lying in financial documents from a highly sensitive position overseeing financial institutions.”
Meanwhile, Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, accused Cook of falsifying records to obtain mortgages. These allegations were not included in the governor's lawsuit, which remains in a legal battle to secure her tenure.
The next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, when new legal deliberations should determine the course of the case.
