Following OpenAI’s video editing tool Sora reaching the top of the U.S. App Store, Google appears to be considering a major visual overhaul for its Gemini AI app. The tech giant is reportedly testing a redesigned interface that moves away from the traditional chatbot format, instead introducing a scrollable feed filled with suggested prompts and striking images.
Android Authority recently discovered these updates in a new build of the Gemini Android app, though they have not yet been made available to users. By examining the app’s code, a reverse engineer was able to activate the updated home screen. In this version, shortcut buttons such as “Create Image” and “Deep Research” are positioned at the top, followed by the new scrollable feed.
When asked for details, a Google representative responded that there are no updates to share “at this time.”
In the previewed examples, the app suggests creative ways to use your photos, such as “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” or “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Additional prompts with vibrant backgrounds offer more ideas for interacting with Gemini or highlight possible uses. For example, one suggestion reads “Brainstorm out loud with Live,” while another offers “Send me a daily news roundup.”

This redesign aims to provide users with clearer, more targeted ideas for utilizing Gemini’s AI features, rather than leaving them to discover the app’s capabilities on their own. At the same time, the update would make the Gemini app more visually engaging and attractive.
If released to the public, this change could help Google better compete with OpenAI, whose ChatGPT app remains quite simple, opening to a mostly blank interface. It could also take advantage of the popularity of Google’s new AI image model, Nano Banana, which propelled Gemini to the top of the App Store charts in September—reaching number one on September 12 and maintaining that spot until Sora overtook it.
