Facebook’s artificial intelligence is now able to recommend changes to the images stored on your device

Meta AI on Facebook now has a feature that can recommend edits for photos saved on your phone’s camera roll, even if you haven’t posted them yet. This update is being made available to all users in the U.S. and Canada. According to the company’s announcement on Friday, users can opt in to get these suggestions, which will encourage them to share AI-edited photos to their Facebook Feed and Stories.

This feature was initially introduced as a trial earlier this summer. When using Facebook’s app, a permission prompt appears, asking users to “allow cloud processing” so they can receive “personalized creative ideas from your camera roll.” The prompt clarifies that the tool may suggest things like collages, highlights, AI restyling, birthday themes, and other creative options.

To enable these AI suggestions, Facebook’s app will regularly upload your photos to Meta’s cloud. This process allows the AI to generate its editing recommendations. Meta assures users that their media will not be used for advertising purposes, nor will it be used to enhance its AI models unless the user chooses to edit or share the photos on the platform.

You can turn off this feature whenever you wish.

While Meta doesn’t use all your photos to train its AI, agreeing to Meta’s AI Terms of Service allows the company to analyze your images and facial data. The terms specify that Meta may “summarize image contents, alter images, and create new content based on the image” when processing your photos.

Meta also utilizes information such as the date and the people or objects in your photos to generate creative suggestions, which provides the company with deeper insights into your personal life, connections, and activities.

Additionally, by granting Meta access to photos you haven’t yet posted on its platforms, the company could gain a competitive edge in AI development by collecting extensive user data, behavioral patterns, and inspiration for future AI features.

You can manage this feature in Facebook’s Settings under Preferences. On the “Camera roll sharing suggestions” page, there are two switches: one allows Facebook to recommend photos from your camera roll as you use the app, and the other lets you enable or disable “cloud processing,” which is required for Meta to create AI-generated images from your photos.

Meta has been using its leading position in social networking to advance its AI capabilities. The company previously stated it would use publicly available content, such as posts and comments on Facebook and Instagram, to train its image recognition AI. (Users in the EU had until May 27, 2025, to opt out.) Last year, Meta also announced it would use images analyzed by Ray-Ban Meta devices for AI training.
