A standout application of contemporary AI technology is its improved comprehension of spoken language, resulting in more precise voice-to-text solutions. Willow, a Mac-based tool, is now introducing an iOS version that enables users to dictate text by voice in any app.

Much like Wispr Flow, Willow’s keyboard converts speech into text and adapts the formatting based on the context. Supporting over 100 languages, the app allows users to set up custom vocabulary and tailor writing styles for various categories such as professional communication, messaging, email, and more.

A major benefit of Willow’s app is the inclusion of a complete keyboard, unlike Wispr Flow, which only provides a numeric keypad. This makes it easier to quickly adjust words or sentences without needing to retype them, and you can seamlessly switch between typing and speaking without changing keyboards.

Willow was established by Allan Guo and Lawrence Liu, both of whom attended Stanford before leaving to start their own company. Guo participated in Y Combinator in the summer of 2024 with a different founding team, initially focusing on healthcare technology—specifically, software for managing assisted living centers. After that idea didn’t take off, the team spent a year experimenting with various projects.

“During our work in healthcare, we observed that physicians use voice AI assistants to document patient interactions and generate follow-up notes. After many discussions with doctors, it became clear these tools were invaluable. This inspired us to create a voice AI solution for professionals and other users,” Guo shared with TechCrunch in a phone interview.

Guo explained that he opted not to develop another AI note-taking tool, believing that market was already crowded. Instead, he saw greater opportunity in dictation, since much communication happens outside of meetings. The company utilizes multiple models and places strong emphasis on refining its text-to-text system, which leverages Meta’s Llama models for enhanced formatting and personalization.

The company subsequently shifted its Y Combinator cohort to Spring 2025 to launch the product. Since going live, Willow reports user growth of 50% month-over-month. The tool is also being used by enterprise clients such as Uber, Heidi Health, and Zeg, who benefit from features like team-specific vocabulary.

Willow has secured $4.5 million in funding from Box Group, Y Combinator, Burst Capital, and angel investors including Dharmesh Shah from HubSpot, Tomer London from Gusto, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, former Yelp COO Kipp Bodnar, Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian, Adam Guild (co-founder and CEO of Owner), and Instacart co-founder Max Mullen.

Mullen expressed his belief that voice-driven interfaces will define the most compelling user experiences in the future.

“What impressed me most about Allan’s approach is his ambition to go beyond just a top-notch dictation app, aiming instead to build an interface capable of controlling your computer,” he remarked. “When I use Willow, I find myself making fewer corrections compared to the built-in dictation on my computer.”

Mullen also highlighted that one of his preferred features is the ability to use the “Hey Willow” assistant on desktop to compose things like email responses in his own voice.

Willow faces competition from companies such as Wispr Flow, which has raised over $56 million to date; Monologue, included in Every’s subscription package; and other Y Combinator-backed startups like Aqua, Talktastic, Superwhisper, and Betterdication.

Guo mentioned that in the near future, the company aims to expand to Windows and Android platforms, and to further enhance personalization so users spend less time manually editing their dictated text.
