With the rapid growth of digital health records, blood analyses, and data from wearables, the volume of personal health information is expanding at an unprecedented rate. However, many individuals find it challenging to make sense of this wealth of data or leverage it to enhance their well-being.
Function Health , a company that provides ongoing laboratory testing to help users monitor their health, aims to address this issue by unifying health data and making it actionable through integration with an AI system. To advance this mission, Function Health recently secured $298 million in Series B funding, led by Redpoint Ventures, bringing its valuation to $2.5 billion.
Other investors in this round included a16z, Aglaé Ventures, Alumni Ventures, NBA players Allen Crabbe, Blake Griffin, and Taylor Griffin, Battery Ventures, the investment firm NFDG led by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, and Roku’s founder Anthony Wood. With this latest round, the company’s total funding has reached $350 million.
In conjunction with the new investment, Function introduced the Medical Intelligence Lab, an initiative to develop a generative AI model for “medical intelligence” that delivers personalized health recommendations using users’ data, research, and content. According to the company, physicians are involved in training the model. Customers can access an AI-powered chatbot that responds to their health questions, referencing their lab results, doctor notes, and scans to offer individualized advice.
“It’s not enough for AI to exist without being applied to your health,” said Jonathan Swerdlin, Function’s CEO and co-founder, in an interview with TechCrunch. “You should have the ability to manage your own biology. Function Health’s mission is to bring the most advanced technology to human health.”
Swerdlin emphasized that the platform complies with HIPAA regulations, encrypts all user data, and never sells personal details. “Your identity and information are never for sale. Every piece of your data is fully encrypted and safeguarded. Protecting you and your data is our top priority.”
Function’s chief medical scientist, Dr. Dan Sodickson, and co-founder and chief medical officer Dr. Mark Hyman, are jointly overseeing the development of the MI Lab alongside a team of physicians, engineers, and researchers. Swerdlin noted that doctors are actively involved in training and refining the MI model.
Although there are several companies in this sector, Swerdlin said Function distinguishes itself from rivals like Superpower, Neko Health, and InsideTracker by being device-independent and combining lab testing, diagnostics, and clinical insights—offering more than a standard wellness app or AI health coach.
Function currently operates 75 locations across the United States and expects to approach 200 sites by year’s end. Since 2023, Function reports having completed over 50 million laboratory tests.
