Judge Matthew Thornhill, who has served St. Charles County, Missouri, for two decades and is recognized for his Elvis Presley-themed antics in court, has consented to step down after a disciplinary panel determined his actions breached judicial ethics. Thornhill acknowledged donning Elvis’s trademark wig and sunglasses during court, playing his songs during sessions, and making unrelated Elvis references throughout hearings. Most of Thornhill’s conduct took place around Halloween and prompted concerns that he was diminishing the seriousness of court proceedings. He also brought up Elvis’s lyrics or life story during trials, even when unrelated to the matters at hand. "

The panel further criticized Thornhill for discussing his political views and preferred candidates during court.
