ChatGPT’s voice feature is becoming more practical. On Tuesday, OpenAI revealed that it is revamping the interface for its widely used AI chatbot, allowing users to use ChatGPT Voice directly within their chat window, eliminating the need to switch to a different mode.
This update lets you speak with the chatbot and see its replies, including shared visuals like images, as you converse. Previously, activating voice mode would take you to a different screen with an animated blue circle representing ChatGPT’s voice interface. That interface also included a mute option, a button to record live video, and an X to return to the standard text chat.
In earlier versions, you could only hear ChatGPT’s spoken responses, without seeing them on the screen. This could be inconvenient if you missed something, since you’d have to exit voice mode to check the text reply.
According to the company, you can now speak and see your answers show up as ChatGPT replies. You’re also able to look back at previous messages and view images or maps in real time during your chat.
This update makes chatting with the AI feel more seamless, as you can easily switch between speaking and typing in the same session. However, you’ll still need to tap “end” to finish the voice conversation and return to text mode.
The improved voice mode is now the standard and is being released to all users on both the web and mobile platforms.
If you’d rather use the old separate voice mode, OpenAI notes that you can still access it by going to “Voice Mode” in the “Settings” menu, where a new “Separate mode” toggle is available.
