Samsung Unveils Galaxy Z TriFold: A New Era for Foldable Smartphones

Samsung Electronics has introduced the Galaxy Z TriFold, marking its debut in the tri-fold smartphone segment. Revealed in Seoul on December 2, this innovative device boasts a 10-inch dynamic AMOLED 2X display when fully unfolded, alongside a 6.5-inch cover screen—making it approximately a quarter larger than the previous Galaxy Z Fold 7 model.

Set to launch in South Korea on December 12 with a price tag of 3.59 million won (about $2,449), the Galaxy Z TriFold is expected to reach markets in China, Taiwan, Singapore, the UAE, and the United States by early 2026. Samsung is targeting tech enthusiasts and premium users, positioning the TriFold as a pioneering product designed to drive the evolution of foldable devices rather than appeal to the mass market.

Innovative Design and High-End Features

The TriFold stands out with its dual-hinge system, encased in a titanium shell and reinforced with an advanced armor aluminum frame. This engineering allows the phone to fold inward twice, keeping the inner display protected—unlike Huawei’s Z-shaped tri-fold, which leaves the bending edge exposed. The device is powered by a 5,600mAh battery supporting 45W wired and 15W wireless fast charging. Under the hood, it features a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor and 16GB of RAM, promising top-tier performance. Additional highlights include IP48-rated resistance to dust and water and the ability to run three applications simultaneously in a desktop-like interface.

Competitive Landscape and Market Outlook

The release of the Galaxy Z TriFold comes as competition intensifies in the foldable phone market. Chinese manufacturers, particularly Huawei, have already launched tri-fold models such as the Mate XTs, which compete closely in both design and pricing. Industry experts view Samsung’s TriFold as a first-generation device intended to test both durability and user experience. According to Liz Lee from Counterpoint Research, this model serves as a "multi-fold pilot" that reinforces Samsung’s technological leadership, especially as Apple prepares to enter the foldable arena.

Despite these advancements, foldable smartphones are projected to represent less than 2% of the global market by 2025, with high costs and manufacturing challenges hindering widespread adoption.

Samsung’s Approach and Future Prospects

Samsung’s strategy emphasizes innovation and differentiation over sheer sales volume. Lim Sung-taek, the company’s vice president of domestic sales, described the TriFold as Samsung’s most sophisticated and groundbreaking device to date, with the potential to transform how users interact with their phones. However, industry observers note that the long-term success of the TriFold will depend on overcoming issues related to scalability and durability—common hurdles for foldable devices.

With Apple’s anticipated entry and Huawei’s aggressive pricing strategies, the foldable smartphone market could experience rapid expansion by 2026. Samsung’s challenge will be to maintain its edge in innovation while making foldable technology more accessible to a broader audience.
