Google Set to Debut AI Glasses in 2026

Google has revealed plans to introduce its inaugural AI-powered glasses in 2026, as detailed in a recent company update.

During the I/O conference in May, Google announced collaborations with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to develop consumer wearables utilizing Android XR—the same platform that drives Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset.

Unlike traditional, cumbersome headsets that are impractical for everyday use, smart glasses offer a more discreet and wearable alternative for integrating technology into daily life.

Google emphasized the importance of seamlessly blending technology with personal style, stating, “For AI and XR to truly enhance your life, the devices must integrate effortlessly into your routine and reflect your individual taste. Our goal is to empower you to select the ideal mix of comfort, design, and immersive experience.”

The company is developing several AI-enabled eyewear options. One version provides hands-free assistance through built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras, enabling users to interact with Gemini and capture images. Another model features an in-lens display—visible only to the wearer—that can present navigation instructions or real-time captions.

Additionally, Google offered a glimpse of Xreal’s Project Aura, a wired XR glasses prototype. Positioned between bulky headsets and minimalist glasses, Project Aura not only includes an in-lens display but also serves as an extended workspace or entertainment hub, allowing users to access Google’s suite of tools or stream media much like on advanced headsets.

Although Meta has established an early presence in the smart glasses market, Google is now joining the ranks of Apple and Snap as companies preparing to compete with Meta’s hardware offerings in the coming year.

Meta’s success in this space is partly attributed to its collaboration with Ray-Ban and its retail distribution strategy. Google appears to be adopting a similar approach through its partnership with Warby Parker, having already invested $75 million to support the eyewear company’s product development and commercialization. Should Warby Parker achieve specific goals, Google plans to invest an additional $75 million and acquire a stake in the company.
